With the average household in the UK emitting 2.7 tonnes of CO2 every year from heating alone, the UK Government have introduced new regulations to help reduce carbon emissions.  Housebuilders and developers will need to comply with the new SAP10 regulations from 15th June 2022 for all new builds. Richard Bishop, Head of Marketing for UK and Ireland for Panasonic, explores why air to water heat pumps are the future for the housing sector and an essential step in challenging the climate change crisis.

You know things are changing when Evan Davis on Radio 4’s ‘PM’ programme starts talking about Air Source Heat Pumps. Yep, that’s exactly what happened on my radio yesterday.
Evan Davis did a long feature on heat pumps and even visited a home that had one installed.
Unfortunately, he went to a big posh house in London where the install costs they mentioned were massive and over a third over the cost of a typical 4-bedroom house installation, so I’m worried his feature may have inadvertently put people off.
Anyway, Evan is going to be talking about heat pumps again tonight and over the next few days, which is all very exciting for us heat pump fans.
So why is he talking about this? Because things are changing and they are changing pretty fast. At last!
For me, the rate of change hasn’t been fast enough or big enough, but things are definitely happening. The next few months are massive for the UK and for the global green economy.

Decarbonisation is high on the agenda for current housing developments to lower carbon emissions from homes, with the average eco-home capable of cutting energy bills by 30%1. Air source heat pumps currently on the market are very reliable, are quiet in operation and highly energy efficient when compared to oil-fired boilers or electric heaters and can be play a large part in lowering carbon emissions. Further efficiencies can be achieved when linked to smart controllers to produce significant savings for heating and domestic hot water (DHW) provision.

Panasonic is pleased to announce its support for Heat Pump Month, produced in conjunction with Low Carbon Homes UK. Beginning on 17th June, Heat Pump Month provides a month-long series of free-to-attend online events aimed at bringing together housing, built-environment, policy and installation professionals. The first event takes place at 4pm-8pm on 17th June where attendees can access a team of industry experts including one of Panasonic’s low carbon experts, Tony Lathey.
